Sun and Age Spot Treatment
Age spots, also known as liver spots, can result from natural skin aging, as well as ultraviolet damage to the skin from the sun or tanning beds. After significant UV damage the skin will begin producing melanin, a skin protecting pigment, unevenly, resulting in the formation of dark colored areas.
There are several reason that age spots occur. Exposure to the sun or other forms of ultraviolet light exposure, such as tanning beds are the most common culprits. You are most likely to develop dark patches on the areas of your skin that receive the most sun exposure such as your face, back, hands, and shoulders. People of any age, sex or race can develop sun damage or age spots. However, these are more common with certain risk factors including fair skin, a history of frequent tanning, and in people over 40.
You probably know that wearing darker colors on a sunny day will make you feel hotter than wearing lighter colors. This is because dark colors absorb more light. When a laser shines on your skin, the dark patches absorb more energy and suffer damage before the lighter colored areas around them. The darker colored cells die and are removed, while the lighter colored skin cells remain unharmed. This process, known as “Selective Photothermolysis,” is the same technology used in laser hair removal.
